Oct 7 & War Trigger Context/Hamas only attacked military targets on October 7, 2023

CLAIM:

Hamas only attacked military targets on October 7, 2023.

STATUS:

False

KEY COUNTERPOINTS:

  1. Hamas fighters attacked multiple Israeli civilian residential communities where no military targets were present, and the killing of residents inside homes and safe rooms is not consistent with military-target operations. Kibbutz Be’eri, Kibbutz Kfar Aza, Kibbutz Nir Oz, and other communities near the Gaza border were entered and attacked directly. Residents were killed inside residential structures after fighters searched homes and safe rooms. These communities are not military bases, do not contain military installations, and were not adjacent to active military operations.

  2. The Nova music festival attack, in which over 350 civilians were killed, had no military rationale and cannot be characterized as a military target engagement. The festival was a civilian gathering in the open desert with no military personnel, no military installations, and no proximity to military infrastructure. Attacking it and killing over 350 attendees is not incidental civilian harm during a military operation. It is a direct attack on a civilian gathering.

  3. Hamas also attacked military installations, but that fact does not make the civilian attacks military engagements. The Re’im military base and other IDF positions near the Gaza border were attacked on October 7. Some fighters were clearly engaged in combat with IDF personnel. That is accurate. But it does not transform the simultaneous attacks on civilian kibbutzim and the music festival into military-target engagements. Both things happened. One category does not cancel the other.

  4. Perpetrator-recorded footage, recovered bodycam material, and independent investigations document fighters deliberately entering civilian structures, taking hostages from homes and vehicles, and killing non-combatants. The existence of attacker-recorded evidence eliminates any argument about source bias on this point. The perpetrators themselves documented and circulated their own conduct during the attack.

EVIDENCE:

  • Hamas fighters entered and attacked Kibbutz Be’eri, Kibbutz Kfar Aza, Kibbutz Nir Oz, and multiple other civilian communities near Gaza. The UN commission’s report documents killings across these locations.

  • At the Supernova music festival, over 350 civilians attending the event were killed. The festival site had no military infrastructure, no IDF personnel, and no strategic military value.

  • Over 251 individuals were taken hostage from homes, roads, and the festival site and transported into Gaza. Hostages included children, elderly people, civilians, and foreign nationals.

  • Footage recorded by Hamas fighters during the attack and circulated on Telegram shows killings of civilians and abductions from homes and vehicles.

  • Mapping tools published by independent investigators and Israeli media document the geographic distribution of attacks across civilian communities, military bases, and the festival site, showing that civilian locations were primary targets.

  • The OHCHR commission confirmed that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups carried out attacks across multiple civilian locations including kibbutzim and the music festival, resulting in killings and abductions.

  • Released hostages provided testimony about their abduction from civilian locations and their captivity in Gaza.

Nova Festival as Share of October 7 Total Deaths

The Nova festival alone, a civilian-only site with no military infrastructure, accounts for nearly 30 percent of all deaths on October 7. If Hamas only attacked military targets, this chart should not exist. The word “only” in the claim collapses the moment this single location is acknowledged.

STRONGEST COUNTER ARGUMENTS WORTH KNOWING:

  • Some argue that militants were primarily targeting military bases, specifically the Re’im base and other IDF posts near the border, and that civilian communities were attacked opportunistically or by separate actors, not as the primary strategic objective.

  • Others claim some civilian deaths occurred during crossfire between Hamas fighters and Israeli security forces responding to the attack, and therefore cannot be characterized as deliberate targeting of civilians.

  • The Nova festival demolishes both arguments. The festival had no military presence, no proximity to military installations, and no combat exchange. Over 350 civilians were killed there. Neither the “primarily military” argument nor the “crossfire” argument has any application to that location. If the opponent concedes the Nova festival was a deliberate civilian attack, the claim “only attacked military targets” is already false.

NOTES:

This is a clean False. The Nova festival alone makes the claim false, even before addressing the kibbutz attacks.

Tactical framing: lead with the Nova festival as the single cleanest counterexample. It has no military presence, no military explanation, and no ambiguity. If the opponent concedes it, ask how a claim that uses the word “only” survives a 350-person civilian massacre at a music festival.

Then move to the kibbutz evidence. The combination of the festival and the kibbutz attacks establishes that civilian communities and civilian gatherings were not incidental victims but primary targets of the operation.

The acknowledgment that Hamas also attacked military installations is a safe concession and should be made proactively. Acknowledging that Re’im base was attacked does not weaken the rebuttal. It actually strengthens it by showing the civilian attacks occurred alongside military attacks, not instead of them. The claim says “only.” That is the word that fails.

Avoid saying Israeli forces caused no civilian deaths during the response. That is a separate question. The note is about Hamas’s targets, not about Israeli conduct during the response.

If someone cannot accept facts confirmed by the perpetrators themselves, the UN, and dozens of governments, no archive entry will fix that. don't waste time on people who can't accept facts, let alone people who support it.
